2020 Democrats Denounce The Killing of Iran’s Top General Qasem Soleimani
January 3, 2020
On Thursday, January 2, 2020, the Pentagon announced that the U.S. military had successfully killed General Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian official and head of Iran’s Quds Force, near Baghdad’s International Airport.
Soleimani was known to be the force behind thousands of American deaths in the region and has been a target of the United States since the war in Iraq.

Coming at the start of a Presidential election year, the 2020 Democratic hopefuls were quick to respond by condemning President Trump’s decision to carry out the attack:
“Trump’s dangerous escalation brings us closer to another disastrous war in the Middle East that could cost countless lives and trillions more dollars.”
“This reckless move escalates the situation with Iran and increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict.”
“There are serious questions about how this decision was made and whether we are prepared for the consequences.”
“We can only hope that the President has carefully thought through the national security implications.. but given his track record and history of making reckless and impulsive decsions… there is every reason to be deeply concerned.”
“The timing, manner, and potential consequences of the Administration’s actions raise serious questions and concerns about an escalating conflict.”
“This decision highlights the need to get Donald Trump out of office. We need better decision making in the White House that does not escalate violence but instead invests in diplomacy to achieve our national interests.”
“We have a President who has no strategic plan when it comes to Iran and has only made that region less stable and less safe.”
All of the Democratic candidates agree that General Qasem Soleimani was a grave threat to the United States and its allies, however, none of them have congratulated the Administration or U.S. military for successfully removing the man responsible for thousands of American deaths.
Instead, the 2020 Democrats continue to criticize the President’s actions on all accounts and offer nothing in return. Qasem Soleimani has been conducting Iranian proxies across Iraq and Syria for decades, and he was the individual behind the organized U.S. Embassy protests in Baghdad earlier this week. Soleimani’s death is not only significant because of the blow to proxy coordination, but it sends a strong message to the regime that the United States will not allow Iran to continue its atrocities across the region.
