Where do the 2020 Democrats stand on the Iran nuclear deal?
November 15, 2019
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the Iran nuclear deal, was an agreement made in July 2015 between Iran, the United States, and other world powers to restrict Iran’s nuclear program.
On May 8, 2018, President Trump withdrew the United States from the fatally flawed agreement.
“The Iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing, we know exactly what will happen. In just a short period of time, the world’s leading state sponsor of terror will be on the cusp of acquiring the world’s most dangerous weapons.”President Donald Trump
Under the deal, Iran:
• Received $150 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars
• Was able to buy conventional weapons within 5 years
• Was able to renew ballistic missile purchases within 8 years
• Could delay nuclear inspections for up to 24 days
• Could use its own inspectors to investigate previous sites that have been accused of developing nuclear arms
Despite the horrible stipulations and national security issues with the deal, all of the top 2020 Democratic candidates agree on re-entering the United States back into the deal.
“If Tehran returns to compliance with the deal, I’d rejoin the agreement”Joe Biden
“If Iran continues to abide by the terms of the deal, you bet I will support returning to it”Elizabeth Warren
“We should rejoin the JCPOA immediately and talk to Iran about other regional issues”Bernie Sanders
“I will rejoin our international partners and recommit the United States to the Iran nuclear deal”Pete Buttigieg
“We will re-enter the agreement”Kamala Harris
“We’d have to try to re-enter that agreement, re-negotiate the timeline”Andrew Yang
“I would work to re-negotiate ourselves back into that agreement”Amy Klobuchar
“First and foremost, it was a mistake to pull out of that deal”Cory Booker
“When he tore up an Iran nuclear agreement that we just signed four years ago, which was the strongest agreement to contain Iran’s nuclear weapons program..”Julián Castro
“You need to change course now and get back into the Iran nuclear agreement before it’s too late”Tulsi Gabbard
A nuclear agreement with Iran would grant the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism with billions of dollars and jeopardize the national security of the United States and allies.
